Chapter Nineteen

While the others looked for Richard Day/Richard Kent, Sam went to see Angelo Diaz’s mother in the Kingman Park neighborhood, feeling the usual dread about intruding on grieving people.

On the way, she received a text from Roberto. Friend of the friend is Cory White. Died two weeks ago. No one knows why. You can find the family in Columbia Heights off 16th. Well-to-do peeps. My guy knew him thru work at MedStar. My friend is an orderly. White was a PA.

Very helpful, Sam replied. Thanks so much. Let me know if you hear of anything else on people dying suddenly who are otherwise fine. And make sure I get that wedding invite.

You got it, lady cop. You da best.

I know! I tell everyone that.

He responded with an LOL.

Sam told Gonzo what Roberto had told her. “We’ll hit them up after this.”

Since she had a few minutes, she composed a text to Archie. Met a guy today who used to be on the job in Baltimore. A bad knee sent him into early retirement, but he has a lot of IT experience and is sharp. He’s bartending in Georgetown. I told him I’d pass along his info to you if you have any openings. He might be an asset to your team. Sam included Tim’s name and phone number and sent the text. With that, she’d done her good deed for the day.

Archie responded a few minutes later. Thanks. I’m always looking for good people. I’ll give him a call.

That’d be awesome. I think you’ll like him. He helped me a lot just now with valuable insight.

You getting anywhere?

SLOWLY

I’m hearing some rumblings that Narcotics is making noise about you working this case without them.

For F’s sake. I’m investigating homicides, and last I heard, that was my job. Besides, if they hadn’t dropped the ball on reporting OD deaths, we might not be in this boat, and I might not be attending my BIL’s wake on Sunday.

Don’t shoot the messenger. Cooper was hot about it earlier.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Sure thing.

“What is it with men and their egos?” Sam asked. “I’d really like to know why they have to get all hot under the collar when a woman is doing something they think they’d be better at.”

“What now?” Gonzo asked.

“Cooper is making noise about our investigation and how it should include his team.”

“We’re investigating possible homicides.”

“As you heard me say. Not to mention, it’s been brought to my attention that Narcotics was several weeks behind in collecting OD data from the local hospitals, data that might’ve been instrumental in stopping my brother-in-law and others from buying laced pills. And PS, can I do anything without people getting riled up about me?”

“It doesn’t seem so.”

Sam rubbed her neck, which hurt almost as much as her hip did after chasing after Day. “It’s not enough that I’ve got Ramsey coming for me in traffic, and Offenbach wants to shoot me for outing his affair. Now I gotta deal with Cooper, too?”

“You should’ve taken the deputy chief’s job when you had the chance,” Gonzo said with a laugh.
